I just watched the latest episode of “The Late Show with…” and Walton Goggins was the guest. Watching just a short clip of Baby Billy as Teenjus brought me so much joy!
As y’all know, I worship at the altar of Judy Gemstone. She’s a hurricane of ego and glitter, and I fucking love her for it. But today, I need to talk about the other absolute lunatic stealing every scene in The Righteous Gemstones: Uncle Baby Billy.
Walton Goggins is out here playing the unhinged, delusional, washed-up gospel grifter of my dreams. Every time Baby Billy opens his mouth, I laugh, cringe, and thank the TV gods for casting Goggins in this fever dream of a role. This man is giving televangelist Kenny Powers (watch Eastbound & Down!} and Southern-fried sleaze with a side of trauma, and somehow it works.
Teenjus? Baby Billy’s big rebrand where Jesus is a hot teen influencer? Blasphemous. Deranged. Iconic. I laugh so hard it hurts. That shit belongs in a museum.
And then – then – later in the episode, Baby Billy screaming “COCAINE!!!” as he charges (ineffectually, beautifully) to help Eli was the kind of batshit moment that reminds you why Danny McBride is a genius. Nobody else is doing comedy like this.
The final episode drops in a few days. Watch the whole damn series while it’s still streaming. It’s foul-mouthed, god-obsessed, emotionally unhinged, and holy fuck is it funny.
